Only a qualified veterinary surgeon is allowed to carry out Acupuncture on animals and we are one of very few vets locally that are authorised to do so. St George’s Vet Monika Kleyenstuber is fully trained to carry out Acupuncture on domestic pets and horses and has many success stories under her belt.
Acupuncture is an ancient art of placing needles in special locations on the body
to alleviate pain and allows the body to restore itself to its natural state. Needles
are placed into trigger points and specific meridian points related to the problem
areas that cause the animals discomfort. It is predominantly used in the treatment
of musculo-
The effect of Acupuncture can be segmental. This means nerves, muscles and acupuncture points in the same spinal cord segment as painful area are targeted with needles. This causes the brain and spinal cord to release natural pain relieving chemicals, such as endorphins and serotonin, which results in generalised pain relief.
On average ten to twenty needles will be used per treatment session. This gets repeated on a weekly basis for four to six weeks depending on the animals response to the therapy. After this, once the animal is stabilized, maintenance sessions may be needed on a monthly basis.
Our most common cases include:
• Osteoarthritis
• Acute Pain
• Chronic Pain
• Certain skin conditions
• Certain bladder problems
