A large percentage of our pets are overweight and this is mainly down to us humans giving them too much food and not enough exercise. Pets require a healthy food and exercise balance as much as we do.
Many owners get disheartened by how little weight their pet loses each week. What needs to be remembered however is that as little as 0.5kg per week is a fantastic result in a pet. It is a slow gradual process. Unfortunately there is no quick fix, dropping a dress size in a week may be achievable for us (if you’re really lucky!) but more patience is required with a pet.
If an animal is even slightly overweight you could be putting their health at risk. You would all of heard the phrase ‘killing your pet with kindness’. This is so true when it comes to feeding our animals. Would you still give that tit bit if you thought it would take a couple of months off their lives or put them in physical pain? The most common health problems our pets face when they are overweight are Diabetes Mellitus and Arthritis.
